Ford Racing UK – Autosport update

Wednesday 12th January 2012

A strong positive field of energy stirred many stands at the Autosport International Show today.

It was announced today that the Ford Fiesta Championship and Ford Fiesta Junior Championship will have a wider audience as an outline deal has been agreed for the race footage programmes to now be going out to the USA. American web based television channel www.GoRacingTV.com will after being shown on MotorsTV, carry all of the race programmes for both championships and then as each new programme arrives will archive the 2012 season footage for reviewing. GoRAcingTV executive producer – Errol J Tucker and Ford Racing UKs Kevin Shortis reached this outline understanding on the Ford Racing UK stand at the show.

Ford Fiesta Junior Championship

Fiesta Junior Championship will now mirror all of the senior championship rounds and has seen a big surge of interest as over 12 Junior specification racing Fiesta STs have now been built and most have drivers to take them to the first race round at Silverstone in April.  The anticipated 14 – 18 cars to compete at Silverstone is looking solid.

Fiesta Junior Championship competitors will now benefit from a special race suit which will come as part of the registration fee. A deal has been struck with leading race suit manufacturer AWS of Ashford Kent primed to supply the corporate identical race suits to drivers. The eye-catching design will carry driver and championship information logos. Details of how to order will appear once registration forms have been received by the championship.

Race team WDE reported brisk business on their stand with the Fiesta Junior car of Freddie Lee being prominent. They also reported some serious enquiries from potential competitors to fill out the proposed FOUR car junior WDE team.

Following a planned meeting between championship organisers and the BRSCC it was agreed that the format for the opening rounds of the Ford Fiesta Championship at Silverstone will now have the separate racing for class C and then classes A,B and D back as originally understood.. This was as originally planned but changed by the BRSCC some weeks ago. A method of making the timetable work is now being constructed.

Formula Ford Festival - Information

Brands Hatch 15th & 16th October 2011

Well the Competition Car Insurance - Dunlop Ford Fiesta Championship graced Brands Hatch for the final races of the 16 race season. The racing was arguably more intense and fun to watch than the 'headline' Formula Ford Festival racing. Perhaps the first class A and B race saw some lead changes which other championships would love to have. Our own Dave Elsom and Ed West challenging the lead with a top flight Belgium touring car driver shows the versatality of the Fiestas and their appeal. How many other championships would attract such company ?

On the whole the brilliant sunny clear blue skies stamped the theme for the whole event. Our racing matched the conditions and it was exciting close fought duels all through the classes. At the end of the racing, a big attendance saw trophies presented to not just the race winners, but also to the overall class champions.

History made at Lydden Hill

Sunday 11th September 2011 saw history made on two counts.

The first was the maiden outing of the Daniels Motorsport brand new Ford Fiesta Zetec S (Mk 7) which was literally finished on the Saturday morning. The car then did the regulatory laps behind the Fiesta Championship saftey car prior to the two races scheduled for the afternoon timetable.

The car broadly ran well and led the second race outright for many laps until driver Pete Daniels found a fuel surge make progress harder and so as not to get tangled with the other calss battles behind, elected to fall back in space. After the race Daniels reported the car has greta potential and the team were looking forward to fettling it in properly and then getting on to build more for customers for the 2012 season.

The second was the outing of the Fiesta Junior- Fiesta STs. Several cars were on show in track action on both days. A great future beckons and the interest is now expanding to record levels with cars being built by WDE Motorsport, Daniels Motorsport and O'Dell Motorsport. Other team equiries have also been received this week which bodes well for numbers in 2012.

Four of the eight cars which all took to the track later.

07 August - Ford Fair - Ford Racing UK news from Silverstone

The Ford Racing UK stand hosted over a dozen Ford Fiesta and Ford XR race cars at Ford Fair at Silverstone on Sunday 7th August. The day was blessed with good weather and an estimated attendance of over 18,000 people. The Ford Racing UK stand was centred in two garages and for this show, the rear of the garages become the display area. Drivers who wished to, had the chance to drive the full GP circuit courtesy of Ford Racing UK.

Ford Racing UK is indebted to those teams and competitors who came along to support our race championships. It was a really busy day for everyone on the stand.

Corbeau had a presence on the stand and their huge display of seats and accessories were a great source of interest to race and road drivers alike. Corbeau have expressed a way of exploring closer ties with our race championships to offer competitors good deals on their products. This will be followed up in the coming weeks ahead. Corbeaus Vic Lee and Kathryn were on hand to give expert help and advice to interested parties.

The eagerly awaited appearance of the brand new Mk 7 Fiesta Zetec S race car heralded the dawn of another new dimension in the Ford Fiesta Championship. The freshly built Daniels Motorsport Zetec S was a major attraction on the stand. The interest in the Zetec S was really astounding with many former competitors expressing a serious intention to build one for 2012.

This will in time become as great a success as the Fiesta ST has been in the UK. All eyes are being kept on developments at manufacturer level to see when the new Fiesta ST is due to hit the streets.

Also seen at Ford Fair - on the Mountune Racing stand

Kempster Ford MD Ian Fletcher had his car on display with Ford Fair sponsor Mountune Racing. Until recently, Ian was a regular in the Ford Fiesta Championship, but is now looking at other race options closer to home where the travelling is less of a burden from his Lancashire based Ford dealership. We wish him well.

news of television and new sponsors

Ford Fiesta Championship Television coverage

It has now been confirmed that the championship’s programme coverage has now been increased for 2011. The large race entries seen in 2010 and now likely to expand again in 2011, will now reflect an increase to one hour broadcasts for the Class A, B and D and a separate hour for Class C. This means that the championship will now get two hours of race action going out on MotorsTV and then the same three or four repeats giving some 6 – 8 hours of screening. The anticipated switch to HD by MotorsTV is now expected around September/October 2011 which should see the Formula Ford Festival action by Fiestas beaming around the television airwaves in graphic HD picture quality. This is brilliant news for all drivers and should add grist to the mill for those snaring further sponsorship. The identity of the production company who will be given the contract for 2011 will be revealed on Monday 31st January.

Millers Oils joins Fiesta Racing

Millers Oils, a very familiar name in motorsport has now added its name to the Fiesta Championship by becoming a preferred lubricant supplier. A generous discount scheme is being set up for all competitors to gain from when they order and use Millers Oils products. Details of this scheme will become available to registered competitors shortly in a separate communication.

GALFER brake pads – agreement to be finalised.

As previously reported, the Spanish company GALFER who supply quality brake products is to become the control supplier for the Fiesta Championship. GALFER have a large exposure in Europe and are looking to use the Fiesta Championship in the UK to promote the brand name and the products. Details of the ordering system and UK supplier will be made known on Monday 31st January.

British Racing & Sports Car Club to continue to organise Fiesta race days

The BRSCC will continue to organise the race day action for race rounds where the Fiesta Championship is to feature. A spokesman for the BRSCC said that an announcement for race entry costs will be made soon after the implications of inflation have been factored into calculations and that it was the intention of the BRSCC to provide its racing members the level of service that they have come to expect.

Fiesta Championship heads the Motorsport News race review.

Motorsport News (29 December issue) carried a National Racing review and the lavish praise was singled out for the Ford Fiesta Championship. It seems that they now understand something which we have known for a while. One make racing is both cost effective and increasing evermore in popularity.

Of the top ten club drivers nominated by MN, it was the Ford Fiesta Championship's Edward Cockill who was awarded the number 1 spot.

This is a great write-up for the championship and obviously recognises the status and position that the Ford Fiesta Championship occupies in UK motorsport. A big thank you to everyone involved in the championship.

The piece written by Rob Ladbrook (and reproduced by kind permission of MN) is quoted below -

Some purists might not like it, but single-make racing is on the rise in British motorsport. Many club-level, one-make categories have thrived this year, with increasing numbers of drivers looking to showcase their skills in identical machines. For the drivers, the appeal of one-make racing is simple: driving skill makes the difference, as opposed to whoever's got the latest modifications under their bonnet. This keeps the budgets down (in theory, at least), while limiting modifications also makes the cars easier to maintain.

The biggest success story for the one-,make saloon racing in recent years has been the BRSCC Ford Fiesta Championship. Back in 2008 series bosses introduced the ST model as an additional class. That step worked, because the class has grown substantially and helped to keep the Blue Oval-based championship healthy.

The ST class boosted the Fiesta series in two ways. For a start, the newer car has helped the image of the category, which before then was based around older-model Fiestas. Secondly, the ST offered a good 'bang for buck' ratio: the car is only less marginally powerful than a Renault Clio Cup machine but a season of racing can cost £50,000 less. That helped draw in several aspiring but cash-strapped drivers.

Two experienced racers in the ST class this year were ex-Seat Cupra Cup competitor Jeremy Gumbley and Formula Ford 1600 convert David Grady.

Gumbley took a year out of racing after the collapse of the Cupra series at the end of 2008 but he came back with a bang this year. He clinched the title by winning six races and finishing on the podium in every event bar one.

Gumbley was pushed all the way by Grady. The Unitec Racing boss made a late decision to join the series and delays in building his new ST meant he missed the opening round at Lydden Hill. With no testing, the start of the year was a struggle for Grady, but once he had adapted to the handling characteristics of the Fiesta compared to a Formula Ford car, he was right on the pace. Grady and Gumbley clashed in the season finale at Brands Hatch. Gumbley was disqualified for his part in the incident, but by that point he had done enough to win the crown.

Perhaps the best story of the year came from the lower classes. Brothers Harry and Edward Cockill had never so much as sat in racing cars before this year, but the karting graduates both claimed class titles. The pair ran their own cars through HE Motorsport team. Spannering a racing car is a different prospect from running a kart, and the pair spent long nights in their East Sussex workshop making sure every set-up base was covered. "We've run our own karts for years and it's given us a really good worth ethic," says Edward, who acts as team boss. "We put in many hours under the bonnet. By mid-season we knew how to get the best from the car and it showed." Harry dominated the smaller engined Zetec class, while Edward to the Si title after solving an overheating problem that sapped his engine's power early in the year.

Fiesta Championship mentioned in Autosport Magazine season review - BRSCC

The Ford Fiesta Championship was mentioned in a paragraph under the Season Review - BRSCC page in Auosport this week (see page 74 of 30 December issue). A nine line piece which mentions the ' ever popular Fiestas, ' highlights the class winning form of Edward and Harry Cockill and Jermey Gumbley. ' A neat photo of Harry Cockill's Fiesta Zetec also appears on the page.

RACE CAR LIVE at Brands Hatch - WDE Motorsport on parade.

Brands Hatch played host to Race Car Live;

a showcase of live and static action.WDE Motorsport put on a fantastic display in garages 9 and 10 as they put out three Fiestas on track for budding drivers/competitors to try. The two Fiesta STs and Zetec were used to good effect with Class C Champion Jeremy Gumbley on hand to demonstrate the solid qualities of the race ST.

The garage action extended to simulator race laps of Brands Hatch where the public were invited to set the fastest laps. The winner and runners up would receive some thrilling prizes. Corbeau had a display of seats and accessories which drew much interest. A Fiesta Zetec S road car was also on display to show the model which will be out in Class D next season.

The Ford Fiesta Championship was well represented by the WDE Motorsport team and many enquiries were received from potential competitors. All in all, a great weekend and a big thank you to Wayne Eason and his team.

A source close to the championship has confirmed that a competitor has purchased a late model (2009) Ford Fiesta Zetec S which is to be converted to a race car for the 2011 Ford Fiesta Championship in class D. This is the first of the new Fiesta Zetec S cars that is believed to be being prepared to race in the UK next season. The car is to be finished and is hoped to be displayed at the forthcoming Autosport Show in January. The identity of the competitor will be revealed in due course when the team project goes public.

New class to add to Ford Fiesta Championship for 2011?

Hot news that the 2011 championship will see an additional class to include the current new Fiesta Zetec S is now being considered. The new class (Class D) is being mooted to run with Classes A & B and to become the development class with a view to look at a time in several seasons to come as an addition to the championship as maybe older cars begin to ease out of the Fiesta Championship. With the possible forthcoming Fiesta ST to be launched as a mainstream model in two or three years time, it is felt that having a current model in the championship line-up will see us well placed to evolve as the championship moves towards 2012/2013.

Interest has already been expressed by certain parties in building and supprting a car in 2011.
